Keynote Abstract: The Future of Authority and the Rise of the Network Society

Jesse Hirsh has just completed a major research project focusing on the future of authority. The premise being that in a society that is constantly changing it is increasingly difficult to establish legitimate authority and provide the kind of leadership that is in great demand. Technology continues to have a disruptive impact on how, and who people trust, leading to an unstable environment that requires a reconfiguration of how we relate to our leaders.

Educational institutions are on the front lines of this broad social change as they tend to be the ones trying to explain what's going on. Understanding how this relationship is changing will help us all not only survive and thrive but also help prepare society for the brave new world we are entering.

Speaker: Jesse Hirsh

Jesse Hirsh is an internet strategist, researcher, and broadcaster, currently based in Toronto, originally from North Bay. He has a weekly nationally syndicated column on CBC radio explaining and analyzing the latest trends and developments in technology using language and examples that are meaningful and relevant to everyday life.

He owns and operates the think tank Metaviews.ca, which focuses on research and consulting around new media business models. He's also one of the founding faculty at the Academy of the Impossible, a peer to peer educational institution in Toronto.

Abstract: Mobile Mania: Developing and Supporting Mobile Learning Opportunities at Nipissing University

In this session, three diverse mobile learning projects are outlined: two focused on student learning and the third on capacity building.

The first project targets September 2012 when all full-time, first-year students enrolled in the four-year Bachelor of Business Administration Program in the School of Business will receive iPads to enhance their learning. Findings conducted in various pilots conducted to prepare for this initiative as well as specific apps used in the pilots will be presented.

In the second project called the Mobile Experiential Leadership Development or MELD project, Nipissing University and the Trillium Lakelands District School Board offered a grade 11 Leadership and Support course and Nipissing’s University Success course as a two-week full-time, dual credit active learning experience enhanced through mobile technology. The experience was hugely successful and planning is underway for MELD 2012.

The third project stems from Nipissing University’s work in developing its own apps for mobile learning. Recognizing the wide range of platforms students have access to and the logistical complications of having apps delivered to and reviewed by the app store for the three main operating systems (Android, BlackBerry, and Apple), Nipissing has taken the decision made to develop web applications which are hosted on web servers and look and function like apps. The benefits and challenges of this work will be discussed.
